Ford Goes Electric with the Bronco, But Only in China
Ford just made a big move in China. While the rest of the world waits and wonders when we’ll see an electric Bronco in showrooms, China already has two. The Ford Bronco EV and PHEV China launch is official, and both are purpose-built for the world’s biggest electric vehicle market.
The lineup is called Bronco New Energy. Funny name, serious hardware. These new models are bigger than the Bronco Sport, ride on a unibody platform, and come with a wheelbase that matches the full-size four-door Bronco sold in North America. And yes, the classic full-size spare tire on the tailgate is still there.
Big Battery, Big Range, Big Attitude
The fully electric Bronco runs on a 105.4 kWh battery supplied by BYD, offering an estimated 650 kilometers of range under China’s CLTC testing, which comes out to around 404 miles on paper. Two electric motors with all-wheel drive and 311 BHP.
Top speed? 170 km/h. That’s fast enough for highways and trails, and with that Bronco stance, it looks the part.
The PHEV Is Here for the Long Haul
The plug-in hybrid version, officially called an EREV, takes a different approach. The plug-in version runs on a 43.7 kWh battery, which delivers up to 220 kilometers of pure electric driving before the petrol backup steps in. Once that’s used up, a 1.5-liter petrol engine kicks in. It doesn’t power the wheels directly but acts as a generator, recharging the battery and giving it a total range of 1,220 kilometers.
It also has a dual-motor setup, just like the full EV, so it doesn’t skimp on performance either.
Only in China, for Now
Ford is building both the EV and PHEV Bronco locally in China through its partnership with Jiangling Motors. And for now, they’re staying there. No plans to export these models to the US or India just yet. The company is clearly targeting China’s growing new energy vehicle market and this launch helps Ford stay in the game against domestic competition.
And yes, there’s tech. Roof-mounted lidar and other advanced driver assistance systems that point to Ford’s focus on semi-autonomous driving features.
Price and Availability Price TBA, but expected to be 300,000-400,000 yuan. That puts it in the ballpark of ₹35 to ₹48 lakh in India, or roughly $42,000 to $55,000 for international comparison. Q4 2025.
