Toyota is gearing up for a big change in its sports car lineup. The next-gen Toyota Supra hybrid is expected to arrive in 2027 and will reportedly ditch BMW components altogether and run on a Toyota built hybrid powertrain. This is a new chapter for the Supra, the first time it will be an all-Toyota product in its modern era.
Hybrid Power Meets Rear-Wheel Drive
According to Japan’s Best Car magazine, the sixth-generation Supra will have a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine developed in-house by Toyota. This will be paired with a self-charging hybrid system targeting around 400 horsepower. That’s the same ballpark as the current inline-six but with better efficiency and lower emissions.
An 8-speed or 10-speed automatic gearbox is expected. While Toyota hasn’t confirmed it yet, a manual transmission option is still a hope among fans.
Fully Engineered by Toyota
This time around there’s no BMW Z4 underpinnings. The 2027 Supra will sit on a brand new rear-wheel-drive platform developed entirely by Toyota. The platform could have a carbon-fibre propeller shaft to keep weight down and improve responsiveness.
This follows strong demand for a Supra that feels more Toyota, after years of sharing components with BMW.
A Lexus Twin Could Be in the Works
There are rumors of a Lexus version of the new Supra that could have 2+2 seating and a convertible body style. It might also replace the aging RC and LC in Lexus’s lineup, a more luxurious take on the same performance DNA.
Final Edition Before the Shift
The current GR Supra is nearing the end of its run. A “MkV Final Edition” is reportedly planned for 2026, the last year of the BMW based model. A short production pause is expected before the next-gen Supra goes global in 2027.
