Honda is serious about electric in India. Recent patent leaks confirm they are working on a fully electric version of their best selling commuter bike – the Honda Shine – with swappable battery technology. This could be a game changer in the entry level electric two wheeler space where range, cost and convenience matter most.

What’s New in the Honda Shine EV?

From the patent images it’s clear Honda wants to keep the Shine’s familiar commuter design and replace the fuel tank and engine with a centrally mounted electric motor and two 1.5 kWh battery packs. These will be swappable like what Honda is already doing with the Activa e scooter.

No waiting around for a recharge. Just swap and go.

Swappable Battery = Smart Move

Here’s why this matters in India:

  • Fast refueling: Instead of waiting hours, you just exchange the empty battery for a charged one in minutes.
  • Lower upfront cost: Using a Battery as a Service (BaaS) model, Honda can sell the bike cheaper since you don’t buy the battery outright.
  • No range stress: With a growing network of battery swapping stations, riders can expect support in major cities, reducing range anxiety.

This is especially good for delivery riders, students and budget conscious commuters who need reliability without the hassle.

Performance & Practical Specs

While Honda hasn’t revealed full specifications yet, insiders expect:

  • Total battery capacity: 3 kWh
  • Top speed: Around 80–90 km/h
  • Design features: Intelligent airflow system for battery cooling
  • Chassis: Based on the current Shine 100 platform

This puts the Shine EV in the sweet spot for daily urban rides – efficient, practical and familiar.

Growing Network, Wider Vision

The EV will likely tie into Honda Power Pack Energy India’s (HEID) fast growing battery swap network. After a start in Bengaluru in early 2025, expansion to Mumbai and Delhi is already underway. By 2028 when the Shine EV is expected to launch, Honda could have a dense network in place.
