Intro

Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch the Wagon R Flex-Fuel in India in early 2026 with production to begin this fiscal. This will be one of the first mass market flex-fuel vehicles in the country, helping everyday commuters save on fuel and reduce emissions.

Maruti Suzuki Flex-Fuel Wagon R launch date

Suzuki’s official documents confirm flex-fuel vehicle production will start in India this fiscal. Wagon R Flex-Fuel launch is expected in Q1 2026. Some reports suggest limited production could start as early as November 2025, but full launch will happen after pilot testing.

What is a flex-fuel engine?

Flex-fuel engine is calibrated to run on petrol-ethanol blends from E20 to E85 with hardware like ethanol content sensor and heated fuel rail for cold starts. In India’s context, the tech aligns with national E20 rollout and gives headroom for higher ethanol availability.

Engine and performance specifications

Wagon R Flex-Fuel will be powered by the trusty 1.2-litre K12N engine which will be modified to run on ethanol blends from E20 to E85. While power and torque will be same as standard petrol model, the changes will be to the fuel system itself including new injectors and pumps. It will come with both 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmission and fuel efficiency will depend on ethanol blend used.

Wagon R Flex-Fuel vs standard model

Design and interior will be same as current car, tall-boy body and practical cabin and “Flex Fuel” badging and cluster readouts for ethanol percentage. Underneath HEARTECT platform and basic suspension geometry will remain unchanged.

Expected price and variants

Price not confirmed; trackers suggest estimated range of ₹7-10 lakh to ₹8-12 lakh ex-showroom depending on variant strategy. Expect a small premium over petrol trims due to additional hardware and validation.

Safety and features

Safety features will be same as standard Wagon R – dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors. Current Wagon R has mixed safety rating from Global NCAP, flex-fuel version has not been tested or rated yet.

Conclusion

If this happens, Wagon R Flex-Fuel will be the first to make ethanol-ready motoring affordable and Maruti will get to create the infrastructure and user awareness first – a lead that others will find hard to follow.
