KTM’s First Electric Bike Unveiled: India Launch Soon?

KTM’s electric motorcycle plans have taken a concrete shape with the first look of its E-Duke prototype at the company’s Austrian headquarters.

The E-Duke was spotted in KTM’s Motohall display area in Mattighofen, caught on video by brand stunt rider Rok Bagoros. This is the first real-world sighting of a project that KTM announced during its 2022 investor meet.

The E-Duke has a 5.5kWh battery and 10kW electric motor, but KTM is focused on the riding experience rather than efficiency. That battery size means a real-world range of just under 100 km.

What’s interesting is how KTM has approached the engineering. The electric motor is in the conventional engine position and sends power to the rear wheel through a traditional chain drive system. This should help riders adapt more easily to the electric transition.

The prototype shares a lot with the Duke 390, gets the trellis frame, aluminum swingarm, offset rear shock, wheels and braking components. But the smaller battery pack could make the E-Duke lighter than the Duke 390’s 168kg weight.

Design-wise, the E-Duke is sharper than its combustion siblings and has the same aggressive styling as KTM. The big tank design, sharp headlamp and tank extensions all carry forward the Duke family DNA.

Adjustable front suspension, small color TFT screen, disc brakes on both wheels. Charging setup looks integrated
with charging cables on top of the tank. An integrated charging setup seems likely with charging cable connections visible on the top of the tank.

The India connection runs deep here. Industry reports suggest if the E-Duke goes into production, Bajaj will manufacture it in India for both domestic and international markets. This makes sense as Bajaj already has a relationship with KTM and has experience with electric vehicles through the Chetak.

The timing couldn’t be better for KTM’s electric entry. India’s electric two-wheeler market has grown rapidly in the last few years with government incentives and growing environmental awareness driving adoption.

Though KTM hasn’t given a timeline, the prototype is far along in development so we could see the E-Duke sooner than you think. KTM’s performance DNA and Bajaj’s manufacturing might just create an electric motorcycle that fills the gap between traditional riding and zero emissions.
